Project description
The goal of this project was to create a smart bandage device that could adjust the pressure put on a person's injury by using an app. This project centred mainly around the UX research aspect and not as much as an emphasis on User Interface. I took the role as a UX Designer and also Team Lead for this project. This project was part of a UX Design module in my first year of college.
Process
This category details the step-by-step approach taken during the project, including research, planning, design, development, testing, and optimization phases.
Research & Planning
From research we had done throughout this project, we noticed that there was a gap in the market for super easy to use smart bandages. We also took note of the lack of use of these in sporting injuries. That is where we found the perfect overlap for our version of a smart bandage. Mountain biking is a sport that has small margins between crashing and a perfectly clean lap. This means there is plenty of injuries in this ranging from small wounds to blood rushing out. Our bandage is used in such a quick fashion and does not need a sign in as it is automatically connected to your google account / Apple account that it is better than competitors already on the market.
Design & Prototyping
With the prototype my team quickly realised why Minimum Viable Products are so common as we added features that we thought would be much better than other competitors but then hit a point of questioning if adding something is over doing it and would it be better to let people use the product and give feedback on if something was needed or not. We really feel with our product that we had executed an MVP very well as our goal at the beginning was to create the easiest to use product out of our competitors, initiative features and the most room to grow after feedback.
Development & Implementation
We envisioned an app that would be far easier to use than any of our competitors. We personally believe we achieved that. Colours only used when they were needed in the settings on the main screen, apart from that the application being very simplified and minimalist. No signing in screen as mentioned multiple times in the rest of this report. This being so someone could download the app and log right in using the devices default log in. This being Apple iPhone (iCloud Account), Android- Google (Gmail Account) etc. It was also important for us not to crowd the app with lots of text as it is not needed due to how simple it is to use, if there are problems it could be answered on the website or through the help button on call, email or in app text. The idea of an Ai bot to help the user also popped up as it could answer questions using our data and from the internet but that was a lot to do in a short space of time. We did not quite implement this, but we wanted to create a feature that would call through your emergency contacts with the press of a button. Making it so you did not need to keep calling one by one. We could not find a solution to do this automatically unfortunately on Figma. Another feature we planned on adding which was mentioned previously would be colourblind mode so that the person could still understand instantly what pressure each setting would give. Although after some research we found that this would not be needed as Apple and Android devices already have these features throughout all the phones. Something we believe separates us from competitors is the widget which you can use without going into the app making it easy to adjust quickly.
Testing & Optimization
We had multiple different people with different view points test the product. To gain valuable insight from multiple angles and perspectives.
Outcome
Based on user feedback from the college nurse and a general user test we found and can predict that:
Future Proof
We believe our product has the best platform to evolve and grow from the final project we submitted as we left room to improve already existing features and add new ones.
Positive User Feedback
The college nurse was extremely happy with our design and loved the innovation we brought with efficiency.
Increased Accessibility
A large focus in our project was on accessibility and including features that anyone could use. Accounting for all possible scenarios.
Conclusion
All in all, we feel that we executed our vision perfectly and we would have the standout product compared to others after a few months of feedback and improvements as ours as the most standout features in our eyes.
