Project description
The goal of this project was to create a concept of a movie streaming service as I believed that although there was a standout service in this industry that were by far the best, that being Netflix, there was room to create something even better that combined each of the services of the best movie streaming services at least in a UI sense in my opinion (Paramount+, Disney+ and Netflix).
Process
This category details the step-by-step approach taken during the project, including research, planning, design, development, testing, and optimization phases.
Research & Planning
I started off by looking at what already existed in the space doing a competitive analysis and taking notes on what each of these excelled in. Next I looked at it from an outside perspective of what I personally felt worked and did not. For example, I thought when it came to to the sign up / sign in screen that Paramount excelled along with how the user experience was with paying and selecting a plan. While with the main Ui a mix of Netflix and Disney+ was the best move. Another thing that I also found was that Netflix were by far and away the best user experience as a whole. I believe even someone with no knowledge of when each started could tell you that Netflix was the site that had the most time to refine their product.
Design & Wireframing
To begin with, as I said previously I listed different aspects of each site that I believe worked well in both the visual and experience departments. Then from this I picked the best aspects for the site from one combined list. This could have 10 Netflix features but only 1 Disney feature but this didn't matter as I was looking to create the best possible movie streaming service. Apart from some small things I thought of at the beginning I mainly implemented my own idea's further down the line when I started designing. This was because for me it is much easier to get idea's when I see the process. I decided to design each screen in order of the sign up process, this was because I could picture the process a real user would go through, using empathy to put myself in their shoes. On the plans screen I used a decoy technique that would give off the perception that user's "might as well" go for the second tier as it has much better value. When in reality it was intentional. This being a well known technique and nothing groundbreaking but a very important feature for a subscription based service. I added small features everywhere on the mock up that are used everyday by big corporations.
Testing & Development
When it came to testing and developing feedback based on the response I showed it to both a senior Product Designer who I knew and someone I contacted from college that was working on a project that was a mix between a movie streaming service and an alternative to letterboxd. Both of these interactions were invaluable. From the Product Designer I was able to get feedback which improved the project ten-fold, I learned a lot about small details that made a huge difference and what was considered industry standard when it comes to design. With the person from college, he gave me a much better perspective on how an actual user would react to features and a far less technical view of how to improve the product. Both of these perspectives were as valuable as the other.
Outcome
Based on predictions and feedback from people in the industry, the ideal outcomes would be:
Positive User Feedback
I gained positive user feedback from both user's, this would indicate that with more feedback and changes that the service would see a huge increase in users if adopted by a big streaming service.
Increased Watch Time
This comes as more of a prediction but I believe with the improvements made and the idea for a feature that functions as classic television. Which you have to be there to watch and not be on demand. The watch time from users would increase.
Conclusion
The conclusion that I found from this project was that it isn't about a number of big features but more so all the little ones combined. They make the difference between getting a user to stay or leave.
